Ethereum surpasses Bitcoin in total transaction volume, but Bitcoin remains the most searched cryptocurrency.
Total transactions on the Ethereum network surpassed those of Bitcoin by more than four times in 2022, but Bitcoin remained the most searched cryptocurrency. Data from Nasdaq and Ycharts showed that Ethereum had 338% more total transaction volume in 2022 (408.5 million) than the Bitcoin network (93.1 million).
The average daily transactions for ETH were around 1.1 million, compared to 255,000 for BTC. However, the transaction volumes for Bitcoin were steadier and more periodic than those for Ethereum, which experienced more volatility due to spikes in demand at certain times, such as during NFT launches and other gas-intensive events like XEN minting.
Ethereum’s higher transaction volumes have continued into the new year, with Ethereum’s transaction count on January 2 reaching 924,614, a 300% increase compared to Bitcoin’s 229,191 on the same day, according to Bitinfocharts. The charts also do not include layer 2 transactions, which would put Ethereum even further ahead of Bitcoin in terms of this metric.
According to L2beat, the number of layer 2 transactions per second (TPS) actually surpassed those on layer 1 Ethereum in mid-October and has remained above it since then. Despite Ethereum’s lead in terms of transactions and activity, Bitcoin remains the most searched cryptocurrency online.
On January 1, a newsletter from “In Bitcoin, We Trust” revealed that BTC had the most attention on Google, with 28.4 million monthly searches worldwide.
It was also reported that Ethereum did not make it to second or even third place in terms of search popularity, with meme coins Shiba Inu and Dogecoin occupying those spots, respectively. Ethereum came in fourth place with 3.8 million global monthly searches.
