New Us Congress Being Urged to Protect Privacy Rights.
Many well-known individuals have joined the digital advocacy group Fight for the Future in support of its call for digital privacy, equitable power & human rights.
Fight for the Future, a nonprofit that promotes digital rights has published an open letter on its website urging the new members of the US Congress to uphold privacy rights. Numerous businesses and organizations have signed the letter as cosigners.
The authors of the letter claim that “increasingly, clumsy and foolish legislative and regulatory measures are holding back the immense creative power of American software engineers.” The letter continued, “And this is even though the First Amendment of the US Constitution protects code as expression, and for this reason, various technologies were developed in the US to preserve privacy.
The letter specifically referenced Filecoin, ZCash, MobileCoin, and numerous communication protocols as “an instance of the powerful digital future that you should foster.” The letter urged politicians to preserve end-to-end encryption, safeguard personal data, and maintain privacy rights.
Additionally, an “effort to detect and remedy power disparities” was urged in the letter. The writers highlighted :
“We need online spaces that are not owned or controlled by a single person, as they put users’ privacy at risk. We need tools that give individuals and communities power over their online experience.”
The letter had 36 signatories as of the time of writing, including prominent organizations within the sector like the Blockchain Association, DeFi Education Fund, Ledger, Nillion Network, Protocol Labs, and Proton. Signers are still welcome to join.
